Project Management

It obtains products or results with a defined scope and in a controlled manner, and nothing more.

The project is accountable for delivering what was committed; the program is accountable for the benefits being realized. It is the discipline of the fixed commitment, always expressed in the same terms: this scope, on this schedule, at this cost and with this quality.

What a project is

A project obtains results and, once it obtains them, it concludes.

A project declares a defined scope: it may be subject to uncertainty, but never to ambiguity. It advances through management by exception, with tolerances for time, cost, quality, scope, risk and benefit, so that the person managing it immediately decides what is theirs to decide and escalates only what exceeds their limits.

It uses the Business Case as the reference for evaluating each change. And it does not pursue benefits: that is the role of the program.

“A project achieves results; no project achieves a benefit on its own. The mistake that dooms an initiative to failure is believing that a result yields a benefit: that because people take a course, they will apply it in their jobs.”

Javier Peris, author of P4MGO!®

The two tracks

Project Management and Project Governance.

Those who govern are accountable for doing the right things; those who manage are accountable for doing things right.

Managers track

Project Management · Project Manager

For professionals responsible for managing. They decide autonomously on everything within their authority and tolerances, prepare, with their recommendation, the decisions that are not theirs to make, and are accountable for their management to the Owner.

Owners track

Project Governance · Project Owner

For professionals responsible for leading. They are accountable for the outcome to whoever delegated to them, decide under delegation from Governance within their remit, approve what the Manager escalates to them and are accountable for ensuring the initiative remains justified.
